Convenience store as Shinto shrine

Article Abstract:

Lawson, the second-largest convenience store chain in Japan, has developed the Loppi online system to expand the range of goods and services its stores can offer. Its outlets, which have very limited retailing space, can now offer an additional 1,000 items with no extra stock, and the Loppi system also offers services such as booking holidays. This approach, which is being emulated by other convenience store chains, is designed to bring more customers into the stores, which have been negatively affected by the recession in Japan.

Once, his business could do no wrong. Now he weeps for the shame and loss

Article Abstract:

Japan's economic crisis is beginning to have a significant impact on the lives of ordinary middle-class people who until recently had assumed that they would enjoy job security for life. The number of homeless people in Japan has risen to 20,000, from 16,000 in summer 1998, and government efforts to boost consumer spending have so far proved unsuccessful. People who used to be respected in their work and enjoy a comfortable home life are now having to make significant economies and accept a loss of pride.

Meet Robokitty

Article Abstract:

Significant developments have taken place in robotic technology during the 1990s. This is particularly the case in Japan. Here, Sony Corp's Artificial Intelligence roBOt, a computerized dog, has proved extremely popular. The most promising areas of robotics research in the future are likely to include human and animal-like robots, able to interact directly with people and appear to express emotions. It is likely that robot pets will be followed by technology such as household robots and cleaning robots.
