Time to stop hating Barbie

Article Abstract:

Many people regard Mattel Toys' Barbie doll, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary in 1999, very negatively. They feel that Barbie does not offer a good role model, and some even believe that Barbie, who has a figure no real woman could ever hope to possess, encourages women to despise their bodies. They also believe that Barbie is reflective of a focus on trivial issues which diverts attention from what is really important in life, such as poverty. However, it can also be argued that becoming obsessed with what Barbie represents is in itself a negative thing. Adults should recognize that young girls do not really take Barbie particularly seriously.

What do you give the man who has nothing?

Article Abstract:

Christmas trees can be very unattractive if they are in the wrong place, according to Minimalist designer John Pawson. However, he feels that neither Christmas nor Minimalism are dead. He enjoys wrapping Christmas presents to make them look beautiful, and feels that the wrapping is sometimes more attractive than what is inside. He does not decorate his home at Christmas, but is not opposed to certain natural decorations, such as mistletoe. He likes to have around him only what he really needs, with everything else being thrown away or stored in cupboards.
