Cook blames culture of secrecy

Article Abstract:

A culture of secrecy in government has had serious consequences for the UK, according to Labour party foreign affairs spokesman Robin Cook, commenting on the Scott report into the arms-to-Iraq affair. He has called for the clear allocation of responsibility for mistakes which were made over weapons trading with Iraq, and believes that some ministers should be made to resign. The Conservative party has responded by saying that Robin Cook should resign, because he has not apologised to ministers whom he accused of involvement in the affair.

Lockerbie: 10 years on and families pray for the truth

Article Abstract:

The families of the victims of the bomb attack on Pan Am 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, in Dec 1988 continue to feel extremely frustrated because those responsible for the bombing have not been brought to justice. Some feel that there have been deliberate efforts to avoid a trial because this would not benefit the security services. Bert Ammerman, whose brother was killed in the attack, is greatly concerned that the UK and US governments should do nothing to give Libya an excuse not to hand over the two men suspected of the bombing.

City corporations challenged by people power as East Enders seek a share in their future

Article Abstract:

The East London Communities Organisation, which is to see its official launch shortly, aims to work with local companies such as London and Continental Railways and Spitalfields Development Group. The main priority will be to persuade these companies to ensure that an agreed proportion of the jobs they create over the next five years will go to residents of the boroughs of Newham, Waltham Forest, Tower Hamlets and Hackney, where poverty is a serious problem.
