In 1999, the retail sales of cosmetics and toiletries (encompassing color cosmetics, fragrances, haircare, deodorants, shampoo, bath and shower products, toilet soap, suncare products, conditioners, shaving preparations and male toiletries) added up to [pounds sterling]3,802mn, an increase of 20% over the 1995 level. UK manufacturersE sales amounted to [pounds sterling]2,138 in 1998. LEOreal is the global leader in cosmetics, while Boots holds sway in UK. In the toiletries sector, Unilever and Procter & Gamble are the foremost suppliers. New product developments, driven by fashion and technological change, have boosted the industry. By 2004, sales are expected to rise by 13%, valued at [pounds sterling]4,300mn at current prices.

Electric shavers offer the convenience of a quick and easy shaving method in contrast to a wet shave that includes the hassles of water and cream. In1999 the sales for electric shavers (menEs shavers and beard trimmers, womenEs shavers and epilators) amounted to [pounds sterling]79mn, with menEs sector accounting for 77% of sales in terms of value and 62% by volume. In the absence of local production, electric shavers are sourced from overseas, especially Netherlands, Austria and Germany. Philips Philishave is the topmost brand, with Braun and Remington its close competitors.
