Costs rise, but quality does not

Article Abstract:

It is clear that changes need to be made to the UK's current system of criminal legal aid. The costs associated with criminal legal aid are rising rapidly, while those facing criminal charges are not necessarily defended as well as they could be. The Access to Justice Bill proposes a new Legal Services Commission. This would organize the Criminal Defence Service mainly by entering into contracts with lawyers in private practice offering a service guaranteed to be of high quality. This does not go against the principle of the defendant being free to select a lawyer.
