Cowpats or chintz?

Article Abstract:

There is considerable ignorance about the countryside in the UK, both among people who merely visit the countryside from towns and cities and among those who live permanently in the countryside. Many visitors to the countryside like to see attractive country scenes, but do not really wish to experience the harsh realities of rural life. Many farmers seek to boost their profits by using chemicals, and do not seem to pay much attention to whether they are damaging the environment. It is hard to see how the right to roam, which is to be introduced shortly, will change this situation.

We should all be worried by the Wal-Mart revolution

Article Abstract:

The arrival of Wal-Mart in the UK will have significant repercussions for high street retailers. It can be argued that Wal-Mart has the potential to greatly damage retailing in the UK, even if it does not gain permission to open any new outlets. Low prices and fierce competition are to be encouraged, but it is also vital to ensure that retailers meet certain standards in terms of ensuring that their goods do not come from environmentally unsustainable sources or from countries where child labour is used.

Don't pull down the shutters
