Culling can be a fishy business

Article Abstract:

The large stocks of cod in the seas off the east coast of Canada are vanishing and seals are thought to be a major factor together with overfishing. Canada has cut its fishing quotas but European fishermen operating just outside Canadian waters will not. Seal numbers have doubled since the ban on seal fur trading and some Canadian ships have been unable to catch their full allowance. It is a complicated equation because killing seals which also eat anchovies and squid would result in more squid being left alive to eat the anchovies instead. Accurate figures on seal diet and population are urgently needed.
