Cult friction: a sect of warrior mystics - who use martial and magical arts to protect themselves from bullets - may be about to turn Indonesia's political crisis into a bloodbath

Article Abstract:

Some 120,000 young people in the Indonesian province of East Java practise a version of the martial art pencak silat. They have recently been joined by many more who are determined to defend President Abdurrahman Wahid. They have clashed with police and soldiers, and believe that they have supernatural powers.

Cliffhanger vote brings Habibie's regime to an end

Article Abstract:

It seems almost certain that Indonesian President B.J. Habibie will not be re-elected following a vote in the People's Consultative Assembly rejecting his defence of his rule. It is anticipated that there will be widespread violence associated with the election in the People's Consultative Committee on Oct 20, 1999, in which Indonesia's first democratically elected President will be chosen. Supporters of Habibie's rival, Megawati Sukarnoputri, have already been demonstrating in Jakarta, Indonesia.
