Dallas Bower

Article Abstract:

Film producer, sound recordist, editor and writer Dallas Bower began his working life as a bench boy at Marconi Scientific Instrument Co in the early 1920s. He moved to British Thomson Houston in 1927, and then became a sound recordist at British International Pictures. He recorded the first all-talking British film, 'Under the Greenwood Tree,' in 1929. He became personal assistant to Paul Czinner in the 1930s, and was appointed to the BBC Television Service in 1936. He was commissioned into the Royal Corps of Signals during the second world war, and became executive producer, Films Division, of the Ministry of Information between 1940 and 1942.

David Gill

Article Abstract:

Film-maker and film restorer David Gill began his working life in ballet, becoming a soloist in the Sadler's Wells Theatre Ballet. His first involvement with film was during a tour with the Ballet to South Africa. He left the Ballet in 1955 to take up a career in film, and was one of the first employees in commercial television. He directed and edited 'The Dave Clark Five Special' in 1968, and made many documentaries for Thames Television.

Freddie Young

Article Abstract:

Cameraman Freddie Young began his career in the film industry in the laboratory at the Gaumont Studio in Lime Grove, London, England. He was laboratory manager by 1919, and subsequently became assistant cameraman. He undertook a lot of newsreel work in the 1920s, and worked for Alfred Hitchcock on the 1929 film 'Blackmail,' the first British talkie. He later joined Herbert Wilcox and worked out a system of multiple cameras.
