Data transfer proposals lay a trap for business

Article Abstract:

The European directive on the processing of personal data, which European Union member states must have implemented by Oct 24, 1998, will either ban or regulate the transfer of personal information to non-European Union countries that have only limited or no data protection legislation. The UK government has so far made available very little information to businesses about how to address the changes in data transfer regulations. It is vital that this issue is addressed with the same urgency as the year 2000 computer date change problem and the implementation of European Monetary Union.

Advice to Mr Prodi: beware the proposals of politicians

Article Abstract:

New European Commission President Romano Prodi is strongly aware that he must improve the effectiveness of the Commission. However, he should take care to avoid the mainstream administrative and procedural solutions being presented by Europe's politicians, who have overlooked the political significance of recent developments in Brussels, Belgium. European political leaders should now consider how to address the detailed political questions that form the basis of the current crisis of confidence in the Commission.

A designer ghetto rises in Europe

Article Abstract:

Municipal officials in Usti nad Labem, Czech Republic, have agreed to construct a 56 mt-high wall to divide Roma residents of Maticni Street from the street's non-Roma residents. This follows complaints from non-Roma residents about alleged noise and dirt from the Roma residents. The Czech Republic is seen as one of eastern Europe's more socially and economically developed countries, but its Roma citizens still face systematic racism.
