Wanted: a boost for British research

Article Abstract:

A government White Paper on Science and Technology to be published on May 26, 1993, could improve research funding in the United Kingdom. The cabinet minister responsible for science, William Waldegrave, is not responsible for industrial policy, so the failure to utilise university research cannot be resolved by his white paper. The white paper is expected to promote a closer relationship between government and industry, with the requirement that scientists conduct research which has industrial application.

The blades are beginning to turn

Article Abstract:

Wind power can generate electricity quickly and cheaply without causing pollution. The United Kingdom Department of Energy have subsidised a wind power project to attract private investment in wind energy. There are problems obtaining planning permission for wind turbines and the Countryside Commission wants them kept away from designated conservation areas. One possibility is for turbines to be sited offshore.
