Elegant party fixers slink away in shame

Article Abstract:

Before the revelations of corruption in Italy's political circles the restaurant La Maiella in old Rome was full with politicians but now the tables are almost empty and the owner has had to get rid of four of his staff. When former prime minister Bettino Craxi walked out of a building he was driven back by taunts from the public. People at the next table to former foreign minister Gianni De Michelis moved away in disgust when he sat down in a restaurant. Seven of the accused politicians have committed suicide, and many others are shattered after going from VIP treatment to jail.

Struggle for the soul of Italy

Article Abstract:

Italian municipal elections in Dec 1992 offer the chance of a new, honest government worthy of respect. Corruption and decay in the ruling political parties led to economic crisis. Politicians' complicity with the Mafia and the assassinations of judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino activated national discontent. New parties are the Northern League, led by Umberto Bossi, which aims for federation and the Democratic Alliance, led by Mario Segni, which is committed to honesty and reform.
