Pain, panic and a land in torment

Article Abstract:

The extremely poor performance of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in elections to the upper house of the diet came as a great surprise. It is possible that a new era will emerge in Japanese politics following the resignation of Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto in response to his party's failure. Hashimoto performed quite well on foreign policy issues, but found himself hampered by a system that still operates according to firmly established rules. The Japanese political system will change only slowly and painfully.
