Dr Benjamin Spock

Article Abstract:

Paediatrician Benjamin Spock first gained an interest in medicine through a summer job in a camp for handicapped children. He established a paediatric practice in Manhattan in the 1930s, and attracted considerable controversy for his friendly, open approach to children, which was very unusual for the time. He became particularly well known for the book 'The Common Sense Book of Baby and Childcare,' published in 1946. He subsequently divided his time between child development research and parent education.
