Exam terror ... and that's just the parents

Article Abstract:

The UK's remaining 162 grammar schools, some grant-maintained and many independent secondary schools still use exams to select pupils. This approach can put parents and children under great pressure. Some experts do not agree with using exams, pointing out that intelligent children can perform badly on a particular day and that some children mature at a later age. The exams themselves are not necessarily very difficult, but problems can be caused by the fact that the parents' anxiety communicates itself to the child.

'Mummy, why do you have to go to work?' (problems facing working mothers)

Article Abstract:

Many working mothers feel extremely guilty about leaving their children to be cared for by someone else, especially if the children are young and are distressed by their mother's absence. As children grow older, they tend to accept that there are certain advantages to be gained from the fact that their mother works, but they often still wish that their mother could spend more time with them. Mothers must carefully decide whether their children are genuinely being harmed by the fact that they work.

Watch out kids, it's death by animation

Article Abstract:

Head of children's programmes at the BBC Anna Home believes children deserve entertainment and is happy to offer good cartoons, as long as they are part of a mixture of programmes. Cartoons and game shows doubled on BBC and ITV between 1981-91, removing time for storytelling, informative and pre-school broadcasting. US and Japanese cartoons are of low standard, so Europeans co-produced the cartoon series 'The Animals of Farthing Wood.' Commercial pressure may bring more cartoons.
