Exodus swells as Cambodia is condemned

Article Abstract:

International condemnation of the coup which removed Cambodian First Prime Minister Prince Norodom Ranariddh from power has given added impetus to the exodus of expatriates from the country. Former Second Prime Minister Hun Sen, who has replaced Ranariddh, has adopted a defiant stance, stating that the international community and the Association of South East Asian Nations should not interfere in Cambodia's domestic affairs. There has been considerable violence in Phnom Penh, but many residents who fled the city are now returning.

Abdication card played by Cambodia's ailing king

Article Abstract:

Norodom Sihanouk, King of Cambodia, has threatened to abdicate, but this is likely to have little impact on Hun Sen, leader of a coup which ousted the king from his role as Co-Prime Minister of Cambodia. Hun Sen has the power to choose a new monarch and may not select the King's son. Sihanouk was crowned in 1941 and sought political neutrality for Cambodia during the war with Vietnam, which worsened his relations with the US. He was overthrown in 1970 and reinstalled by the Khmer Rouge in 1975.
