Facing the economic test of an older and cheaper world

Article Abstract:

Little attention has been given to the possible connections between deflation and the ageing of the population in developed countries in the first quarter of the 21st century. Japan can act as a useful indicator of what may happen, as it has experienced sustained deflation in the 1990s and is seeing a significant demographic transition towards an older population. An older electorate will not wish to see its savings eroded by inflation. In contrast, younger people are less concerned about inflation. It can be seen that deflation is consistent with the interests of an ageing population.

There is much to fear from Japan rescue plan

Article Abstract:

It is possible to question whether the emergency economic package now being considered by the Japanese Diet will be the right solution for Japan's economic problems. Some elements of the package, such as doubling the size of living space, seem sensible, but they lack credibility within a wider structure which seems out of touch with reality. It is clear that demand must be boosted, but running a larger fiscal deficit may be the wrong way to do this. If the deficit is not credible, it will actually reduce demand.

Japan Inc faces up to need for fundamental reform

Article Abstract:

The decline in the level of capital investment in Japanese industry in real terms indicates that Japanese companies are now investing at a sustainable rate, focusing on profitability rather than on loss-making growth. Japanese workers are experiencing real wage cuts, an indication that companies are starting to adjust labour to demand. Japanese companies have clearly recognized that changes must be made, but this will be a lengthy process.
