Fanfare for the common man

Article Abstract:

Leonard Bernstein composed his 'Mass' theatre piece, commissioned by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis in memory of the President, in protest against President's Nixon's invasion of Cambodia. It includes a Hebrew Kaddish and a Lutheran Chorale and mixes musical styles. The text, which includes subversive commentary, is co-written with Stephen Schwartz, composer-lyricist of 'Godspell'. There are two orchestras, two choirs, rock and blues bands, two organs, a marching band, quadraphonic tape and a street chorus. The work calls for spiritual revolution. The Midlands Arts Centre presents 'Mass' on May 16 1992 at the Aston Villa Leisure Centre in Birmingham. A group of 60 13- to 20-year-olds that makes up the prominent street chorus was recruited by advertising in local newspapers.

The gastarbeiter

Article Abstract:

Jonathan Miller, 59, was considered a vandal when he began producing opera in the UK in the 1970's. In the 1990's he is called boring and traditional. His English National Opera stagings are successfully revived after ten years. He travels to the main houses in the opera world in Vienna, Berlin and New York, where he does not read reviews and is not made to feel embarassed about his age or work. His London production of St Matthew Passion cannot be staged but its narration will be dramatised informally in the round.
