Loaded, primed and ready for the holidays

Article Abstract:

Children in the UK seem to finish school for the summer break very excited, following activities such as school plays, outings, and sports events, and suffer from a tremendous anti-climax when the holidays begin. It might be more appropriate to spread such events throughout the year. In a Chicago school, where there are four shorter terms, rather than the traditional three with a long summer break, teachers and parents are very pleased with the arrangement. The long summer break was once necessary for children to work on the harvest, but this is no longer the case.

Teachers, you could try harder

Article Abstract:

Teachers are now required to write very detailed reports about all aspects of each pupil's performance, but parents are oftens simply left confused. They feel that they are unable to gain a real idea of how their child is performing, and are hampered because they do not understand the language commonly used in the national curriculum in the same way as teachers. Reports often give no idea of whether a child's performance is normal for his or her particular age group.
