Fighting 'not competent' mentality

Article Abstract:

Economic reform in China has had the effect of increasing discrimination against women in the workplace. Young women rarely get the opportunity to take up the best jobs, even if they are extremely well qualified, and it is widely assumed that women are not competent and that they will be more interested in family life than in a career. At the bottom of the scale, large numbers of state-owned enterprise employees have been made redundant, and this has had a particular impact on women.

Vietnam opens its door for business

Article Abstract:

Vietnam is creating links with non-communist countries and has opened the country to foreign investors. Since the Cambodian peace agreement and the lifting of the US embargo, Vietnam has courted Western investment and has applied to join the Association of South East Asian Countries. Most barriers to foreign companies are brought about by bureauocracy, but perserverence pays off and a few foreign and British companies have already established themselves there.

China's new gamblers discover it's easier to speculate than accumulate

Article Abstract:

There are currently 21 million people in China who invest in the stock market. For many people, this is the only way of supplementing meagre salaries or pensions. Share prices have risen dramatically as more and more people have been seeking a limited number of shares, and this has prompted the government to attempt to cool down the stock market. This has come as a shock to new investors who have until recently experienced only a rising market.
