First things first

Article Abstract:

A higher proportion of United Kingdom mothers return to work shortly after giving birth, so usage of nannies to care for their children has increased. Many agencies will not permit mothers to sign until the baby has been born. This can present problems, especially for mothers expecting a first child. First Nannies is an agency set up by Tracy Fox to cater for such mothers. She provides general advice such as the need to set out the nanny's duties and hours clearly from the start, in order to prevent resentment due to the nanny having to take on additional tasks and hours.

The au pair in America: an accident waiting to happen

Article Abstract:

The US au pair market involves agencies which charge high fees to the US families, yet provide little training and often do not vet families to ensure they do not expect too much of the au pair. Families seek continuity in child care and this is one reason why they use au pairs. The agencies ask the au pairs should have experience with children, but they may have only worked as baby sitters. There are also racist attitudes which lead some families to prefer a European au pair to an African American girl.
