Flash, bang, wallop

Article Abstract:

Astronomers using data collected by the Italian-Dutch satellite BeppoSAX have been able to confirm the theory that gamma-ray bursters are caused by some form of great explosive power in space. Other research into gamma-ray bursters has allowed gamma-ray sources to be located very accurately and has established that gamma-ray bursters must originate in intergalatic clouds, far behind the Milky Way. It now seems possible that gamma-rays are sent out as a beam of energy, with the bursters not needing to be as energetic as would be required if they were sending out energy in all directions.

The Russian Mir spacecraft is being abandoned by its crew, including Sergei Avdeyev, who has spent 742 days in space. The spacecraft suffered fire damage in 1997, and further damage after a docking accident. The annual cost of the spacecraft is some 160 million pounds sterling. There is hope of obtaining private sector funds. There is a plan for a crew of two people to travel to the Mir in spring 2000 to refuel the craft and allow it to descend to the atmosphere in a controlled way.
