Viewers, look away now

Article Abstract:

Television news coverage of armed conflict must avoid offending viewers or alienating them from the subject being shown. However, it is also important that television news coverage makes viewers aware, at least to a limited extent, of the realities of armed conflict. The more disturbing images of armed conflict should not be shown until after the 9pm watershed, but ordinary people should still be exposed to the reality of violence, rather than merely to the sort of violence contained in films and computer games.

The unspoken truth about the life of a war correspondent

Article Abstract:

Portrayals of foreign correspondents in books or films often present a courageous, determined person fighting to broadcast the truth. Many portrayals are self-congratulatory and give little insight into the reality of life as a foreign correspondent. One of the few exceptions is Antony Lloyd's account of his time in the Balkans and Chechnya, entitled 'My War Gone By, I Miss It So.' This work shows great honesty and courage, especially in presenting his efforts to overcome heroin addiction.

The horror of seeing my son being attacked in front of me

Article Abstract:

A father tells of his reactions to his three-year-old son being violently attacked in a playground by another child of the same age. His initial horror at this event is detailed, and his efforts to explain what happened to his son in an understandable way are discussed. His own experiences of violent behaviour during his years at school are also reflected upon. His assumptions about the violent child's home background are detailed.
