European party may be spoiled by further interest rate cuts

Article Abstract:

Interest rates can be a very powerful tool of economic management, but it can take a long time for their effects to be felt. It is likely that short-term interest rates will remain low in Europe and the US for a long time.

Forget those old certainties, it's time for a little inflation

Article Abstract:

The fact that the UK has a small amount of inflation may place it at an advantage if the world is set to enter a period of disinflation. Indeed, inflation may allow the UK to survive in the next world recession in better condition than other countries. The UK's real advantage may lie in its inflation mentality, with consumers not being afraid to spend money, feeling that prices will rise soon. It is now important to persuade consumers to spend money within the UK, rather than spending it to the advantage of foreign companies.

Eight years and the US boom goes on

Article Abstract:

The main driving force behind continued economic expansion in the US, despite economic problems in Asia and Europe, is finance, according to research group Conference Board. Low short-term interest rates and high levels of liquidity should allow US economic growth to continue, as a sharp rise in interest rates has preceded every recession since the second world war. There is strong awareness of the factors that may bring US economic growth to an end, but it is hard to know which factors will actually prove significant.
