French Jews call for extradition of 'dead' SS leader

Article Abstract:

The Representative Council of Jewish Institutions in France is calling for the extradition from Damascus, Syria, of former SS Obersturmbannfuhrer Alois Brunner, who signed the order for the deportation of 46,091 Jews from Salonika, Greece, to the gas chambers of Auschwitz. He was transferred in 1944 to the transit camp at Drancy, outside Paris, France, from where he deported a further 24,000 Jews. He was permitted to live in Syria after the second world war, but was officially designated a non-person. He is now almost certainly dead.

Editors fired at from both sides in a vicious war

Article Abstract:

Newspaper editors in Algeria work under great pressure, risking opposition both from the government and from Islamist groups. Newspapers which oppose the government have found their paper supplies restricted, and those which oppose the Islamists risk the lives of their staff. Considerable numbers of journalists are now taking refuge abroad, further limiting the possibility of a democratic press.

Absent minds keep ancient hatreds alive in Hebron

Article Abstract:

Palestinians living in Hebron generally try to forget that there was a Jewish community there until the 1920s, claiming that Israeli settlers only arrived in the region because of the Likud government. Similarly, Israelis tend to view history in a very one-sided way too. This is making the peace process even more difficult to manage.
