Proof of the big bank theory

Article Abstract:

The recent announcement by Lloyds Bank that it is to purchase TSB reflects the changes which are taking place within the banking industry as a whole. Moves by building societies to convert to shareholder ownership have increased competition in the retail banking sector, and changes are also being brought about as a result of growing centralisation. Banking, like insurance, is becoming a commodity product, and customers are now much less likely to remain loyal to a particular brand name.

Asian tail wagged the City dog

Article Abstract:

The collapse of Barings could have been avoided if trader Nick Leeson had not been sent to Singapore, according to a new book by financial journalist Judith Rawnsley. If he had remained in the UK, he would have been more closely supervised, especially as he had a county court judgment against him. The bank's problems were partly the result of its split nature, with the extremely successful Barings Securities operation not having been integrated into the Barings Brothers business.

The breaking of the bank at Bishopsgate

Article Abstract:

Many observers are finding it hard to believe that a young trader could bring down such as long-established and highly respected merchant bank as Barings. The fact that it has indeed happened gives valuable insights into the operations of international financial markets, the way individuals now work in the world of finance and the activities of various regulatory bodies. The financial services industry must now clearly take urgent action to better regulate its activities.
