Glare that marks for life

Article Abstract:

It is widely accepted that it is usually best to protect a child from publicity, as excessive media attention can alter the course of the child's life for ever. However, there have been a number of cases in which one or both parents have disagreed with a court's decision that their child should remain anonymous. The parents have felt that, in their child's particular circumstances, publicity would be beneficial. This has led to a conflict of interests between protecting a child and boosting support for a worthwhile cause, such as medical treatment.

The anti-smoking fundamentalists

Article Abstract:

Statistics seem to indicate that the number of smokers is declining, but in reality this may not be the case. In social situations, many people who would not smoke normally cannot resist a cigarette, but would not call themselves a smoker if questioned by a researcher. Smoking has become forbidden pleasure, with many people smoking in secret. In this way, it in fact becomes more attractive to children. The motives behind No Smoking Day are questionable, and smokers should be allowed to make their own decisions.

Is society breeding child-killers?

Article Abstract:

Three recent incidents in which children were murdered have highlighted growing fears about the safety of children in modern society. Some observers are now claiming that society is breeding child-killers, and these fears are discussed daily in the media. There is certainly justification in strong protests in the wake of such incidents, but in general most people are still getting on with life in a very ordinary way.
