French sports megastore may hit the sector for six

Article Abstract:

French concern Decathlon, which claims to be the third-largest sports retailer in the world, has opened its first outlet in the UK. This is located in Surrey Quays in the Docklands area of London, England. Decathlon plans to open a further four or five stores in the UK in the period to 2002. The sports retailing sector is already being negatively affected by over-supply, poor demand and insufficient differentiation between the leading chains.

Vaux dream turns into a nightmare

Article Abstract:

Brewer Vaux Group faces an uncertain future following the dismissal of Chief Executive Martin Grant and Finance Director Neil Gossage. These two men were found to have been lobbying shareholders without the knowledge of the company's board, encouraging them to oppose plans to sell the Vaux brewery in Sunderland, England, to Frank Nicholson, brother of Vaux Chmn Sir Paul Nicholson. Conflict about this issue could make Vaux a takeover target.

Everybody is seeking value for money, according to discount retailer Matalan founder and Chmn John Hargreaves. He emphasizes that he devotes himself totally to the business and that he is happy with this way of life. He believes that it is important to keep the business simple, and low overheads are a key feature. He would like to see his children play a key role in the company's future, but will take care to avoid nepotism.
