From Istanbul to Oslo, the market marches on

Article Abstract:

Stock markets across the world continue to rise, with new records frequently being set. The fact that this is an international trend indicates that it is related to economics, rather than to politics. Professional investors seem to believe that the world economy is about to enter a boom period. This is particularly the case in the US, where unemployment has fallen to 5% and most people believe that they are better off than they were four years ago. However, it is worth being cautious, as it is possible that share prices are too high and will eventually fall.

Tiger, Tiger, burning bright

Article Abstract:

The victory of Tiger Woods in the 1997 US Masters golf tournament was significant in a number of different ways. He is only 21 years old, but won with a lead of 12 strokes, causing great embarrassment to much more experienced players. He comes from a mixed racial background, but has become particularly popular among mainly white golf fans in southern states. He commands great respect, and is likely to be very influential as leisure pursuits, especially golf, become more important in people's lives.

Sweden shimmers in pre-euro glow

Article Abstract:

Developments in Sweden indicate that countries on the periphery of the euro zone could continue to perform well economically for some time to come. There is no widespread support in Sweden for joining the euro, partly because the country's economy has been performing well, especially on the macroeconomic level. However, Sweden shows a sharp contrast between macroeconomic success and microeconomic failure. Further reform, including some downsizing of the state's role, seems inevitable.
