Galina Ulanova

Article Abstract:

Ballet dancer Galina Ulanova had close links with ballet from birth, as her mother was a solo dancer and teacher with the Imperial Ballet. She was educated as a boarder in the state ballet school, and developed great grace and poetry in her movement, even though she did not have the typical physique of a ballet dancer. She danced Odette-Odile in 'Swan Lake' in 1928, and then began to study a number of leading roles. She expanded her repertoire in the 1930s, with roles including Masha in 'The Nutcracker' in 1934.
