General election dawns early in Sunlight's suburbs

Article Abstract:

The by-election which is to take place shortly in the Wirral South constituency is likely to be a strong indicator of how the main political parties will perform in the forthcoming general election in the UK. In some ways, this local contest is already being treated as if it were a general election, with political announcements having taken on considerable significance. Many voters seem to be going over to the Labour party, but the Conservative party remains confident of winning the seat back at the general election.

Tony Blair needs his Cabinet as much as they need him

Article Abstract:

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair is currently very popular among ordinary people, and this means that he has little problem quashing dissent within his Cabinet. However, no Prime Minister, however strong, can ignore the Cabinet indefinitely. Blair does not really need the Cabinet at present, but he will do eventually. He seems to recognize that he should consult the Cabinet now, even though he does not really have to, as this will place him in a stronger position when he is unable to consult the Cabinet.
