George Smiley would have hated it

Article Abstract:

Architect Terry Farrell designed a concrete, 200-foot high symmetrical office block in post-Modernist style, next to the River Thames near Vauxhall Bridge. It is to be occupied by MI6 who added security features including a dry moat and a wet moat. In 1981 the site was considered an excellent chance for a large quality building. The first design, which included a new gallery for the Tate's modern sculpture collection, was refused planning permission after a public inquiry found it 'gross overdevelopment.'

The toughest nut in Oxfordshire

Article Abstract:

The 1,200-acre RAF base near the village of Upper Heyford, England, has been empty since 1993, and was put up for sale by the ministry of defence in 1995. However, it has attracted very little interest, and its future remains uncertain. A consortium of housebuilders has proposed the building of up to 5,000 homes on the site, which is currently being used to store unsold cars. However, this would still leave a large area of land at the site for which there are no firm plans.

How the Big Bang created a City of Dinosaurs

Article Abstract:

The 1980's property boom led to 20 million square feet of quality financial-services building in London, England. The recession left many of these electronically-equipped buildings mothballed. Listed buildings in the City have also become empty. Bill Eagles directed a television film 'Masters of the Universe: the men who rebuilt the City,' which records this disaster.
