Germany wedded to vision of unification

Article Abstract:

The trend towards European integration will inevitably lead to the development of a federal government of Europe, according to Karl Lamers, a leading foreign policy strategist in Germany's Christian Democratic Union. Germany has already joined with France to call for changes to the Maastricht treaty allowing those member states which are moving most rapidly towards integration to forge closer links between themselves. The key element of a 'core Europe' will be monetary union, which Germany believes must begin in 1999.

Saxony battles Brussels in VW subsidy row

Article Abstract:

The European Commission is threatening to take Volkswagen to the European Court of Justice if it does not return the subsidies it received from the German region of Saxony for its car plant in Zwickau. This stance is being strongly opposed by the regional government, which is in turn threatening to sue the European Commission. The conflict may prompt Volkswagen to move further east, beyond the control of the European Commission.

Bremer Vulkan joins Germany's casualty list

Article Abstract:

Bremer Vulkan, the largest shipbuilding concern in Germany, will not receive support from the German government as it attempts to avoid closure. It is now likely that the company will collapse within a few years, and it is even possible that its name will disappear, prompting the loss of 23,000 jobs. Politicians are focusing instead on creating new jobs to replace those which will be lost through Bremer Vulkan's closure.
