Getty takes high art to Hollywood

Article Abstract:

The new Getty Centre in Los Angeles, CA, combines research, administration, library and museum facilities. It has been constructed on a 110 acre hilltop above the 405 freeway in the west of the city at a cost of around $1 billion. Architect Richard Meier has gained considerable acclaim for the development, which features a facing of 250,000 blocks of travertine marble. However, there are mixed views in Los Angeles about the Getty Trust, which some regard as being irrelevant to a multi-ethic population.

Can a six-year-old have the will to kill?

Article Abstract:

There has been considerable controversy in the US about the case of a six-year-old boy who is currently in a detention centre in California on charges of attempting to murder a one-month-old baby during a burglary. Child psychologists believe that such a young child should not be charged with a serious crime, and even the family of his victim do not want him to be placed in juvenile detention. However, the local prosecutor believes that it is important to take a tough line in this case.

A techno-baronial home from home

Article Abstract:

Villa Simonyi, a high-tech home built for US millionaire Charles Simonyi in Washington by architect Wendell Lovett at a cost of $10 million, is one of a number being built in the area by people who have made a fortune from high technology. Their homes seem to be a monument to the industries in which they operate, and are filled with many complex gadgets. Architects report that clients from the computer industry generally have a very strong understanding of three-dimensional space.
