Give them understanding, not just drugs

Article Abstract:

There are mixed views in the UK about whether children suffering from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder should be treated with the amphetamine-family drug Ritalin, even though this drug has proved very effective in moderating the behaviour of these children. Ritalin has been widely used in the US, but there is now growing opposition to it. In the UK, some psychiatrists are unwilling to use it or are philosophically against it. They argue that stimulants act by controlling children, rather than by treating any biological problem.

A killer of a holiday

Article Abstract:

It is very important that people who travel to countries where there is a risk of contracting malaria take anti-malaria drugs, even if these drugs produce unpleasant side-effects. Anti-malaria drugs do not give total protection against malaria, but it is estimated that, in the UK, the use of mefloquine, one of the four anti-malaria drugs, prevents around 3,000 cases of malaria a year. It is vital to obtain reliable professional advice about how anti-malaria drugs should be taken and in which countries there is a risk of malaria.

It only hurts when I look

Article Abstract:

It is becoming very common in the US and Scandinavia for local and regional anaesthetics to be used instead of general anaesthetics. Surgeons who favour local and regional anaesthetics believe that patients recover more quickly and suffer less post-operative discomfort. The use of general anaesthetics remains widespread in the UK, where some surgeons do not like to be watched by their patients and others feel that a general anaesthetic is less stressful for the patient.
