Giving Heseltine an interventionist hand

Article Abstract:

The UK government's competitiveness unit, created and headed by Bob Dobbie, was a key element of the strategy of Michael Heseltine when he was president of the Board of Trade, and he has taken the unit with him to his new position as deputy prime minister. The unit has played a leading role in a more interventionist approach to boosting the performance of British industry and commerce. It is regarded as think tank, according to Bob Dobbie, but also has a direct role, with Dobbie meeting many companies.

City dealers' bonuses soar to 315m pounds sterling

Article Abstract:

The recent strength of the UK stock market has benefited employees of Stock Exchange member firms, which paid a record 315 million pounds sterling in bonuses in the year to Jun 1996. Stock Exchange members saw pre-tax profits of 719 million pounds sterling, up by 334% from the previous year. Bonuses are now returning to the levels seen in the 1980s boom years, and are probably about the same as those paid in the securities market.
