Article Abstract:

Funeraire, Paris's international trade fair for the funeral industry is big business. Deaths were down 4%in France in 1989 but turnover was up by almost 9%. Creative marketing involves glamour, make-up, disguise and different ethnic tastes for coffins; death is presented as leisure. The national board of undertakers offers prizes for the best tombstones. Five distinct categories of customers have been noted by a French survey: spiritual pioneers, rationalist cremators, religious conformists and undecided deniers.
