Goodbye to the Superman president

Article Abstract:

American presidents symbolise their nation and manage the country. President Bush is unlikely to be remembered for long after he relinquishes his post as he placed more emphasis on management than symbolism. He was the last in a line of American politicians who held a post-war view of the country's international role and the war against fascism. The breakdown of communism has destroyed US policy. Bill Clinton won votes by recommending German and Japanese models instead of making out that America was perfect.

Indian unrest threatens Bush in the old West

Article Abstract:

A larger than usual turnout to vote is expected of American Indians living in western states such as Montana. They feel they have been overlooked by the Republicans and may vote Democratic at the presidential election on Nov 03, 1992. Budgets for the health, housing and education of American Indians were reduced and Supreme Court decisions have ignored Indian religion and obstructed access to sacred sites. Young leaders wish to use the white political structures to protect their rights.

Silencing the poor of America

Article Abstract:

About half the American population do not vote in presidential elections. Turnout is better in every other democratic country exceptSwitzerland. Those who vote tend to be older and better educated. Voters have to apply to be placed on the voting register before they can vote. This procedure varies from state to state but can be an obstacle. Automatic registration when applying for a driving licence was suggested by the Democrats but it was rejected by President Bush in Jul 1992.
