When the wind blew, he bent

Article Abstract:

British Prime Minister John Major put up interest rates and left the exchange rate mechanism (ERM) in the sterling crisis of Sep 1992, showing that his principles can be swayed. His intent to end inflation has been thwarted by the failure of his strategy. The ERM was supposed to protect the pound sterling and Mr Major had always insisted that the pound sterling would not be devalued. Chancellor Mr Lamont, supported by Mr Major and the Cabinet, denied that the pound sterling had been devalued.

'Think again. Look in my eyes and know this: I will always deal fair and true.' (UK Prime Minister John Major)

Article Abstract:

UK Prime Minister John Major has adopted a more confrontational tone in his campaigning as the general election draws nearer. He has directly attacked Labour party leader Tony Blair, claiming that he is arrogant and cannot be trusted. He has called on voters to place their trust in him personally, rather than in the Conservative party, attempting to take advantage of the fact that his personal popularity is greater than that of the Conservative party as a whole.

Message of doom from Major

Article Abstract:

UK prime minister John Major has hinted that the country may withdraw from the European Union, thus clearly distinguishing his stance from that of Labour party leader Tony Blair. He has warned that the European Union could collapse politically and economically if it does not make the right decisions on further integration and a single European currency. His views were expressed at a time when clear steps are being taken towards a single European currency.
