Grasping the nettle

Article Abstract:

There is considerable concern among UK academics about the fact that the new Quality Assurance Agency will have the power to monitor standards at universities. They regard this development as an infringement on university independence, and also fear that efforts will be made to impose an inappropriate uniformity on the university system. It is possible that standards of teaching will decline at some universities because of the need to conform to formal structures which have been created to deal with the weaknesses of other institutions.

Mel Gibson meets Derrida

Article Abstract:

There are very mixed views about cultural studies, which is becoming a very popular university course in the UK. Some observers believe that it is important to study popular culture, while others feel that this is a non-academic subject. It is now taught at around 40 universities and colleges, with the course content varying from institution to institution. In some places, there is strong emphasis on history, while at others efforts are made to give a wide understanding of culture.

Big Brother in a different suit?

Article Abstract:

There is still considerable controversy in the UK surrounding the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education, which is to begin operating on Apr 01 1997. This will contract with the Higher Education Funding Councils and universities to undertake assessments of subject areas and institutions. Some observers fear that the department for education and employment will want to play an active role, thus reducing the credibility of the new body.
