Green about the gills

Article Abstract:

Tom Schulman, screenwriter of 'Medicine Man', thinks films should have a message and set this ecological one in Venezuela where reality fluctuates to accommodate the romantic plot. Sean Connery plays Dr Robert Campbell, a Green biochemist who adopts a native tribe. The heroine, Dr Rae Crain, played by Lorraine Bracco, is a city scientist but basically agrees that natural resources are in danger. The film portrays the scientific establishment as unconnected with business and never mentions the Third World debt but the sadness of destruction is communicated in a shot of a tree being uprooted. John McTiernan is director.

Affairs of the art

Article Abstract:

The exhibition entitled 'Spellbound' currently being held at the Hayward Gallery, London, England, examines the relationship between fine art and the cinema. Some of the contributors to the exhibition have actually made films, while others have been responsible for installations which are extremely referential. Of all the contributors, it is probably Terry Gilliam who deals in the most subtle way with the dynamics which are unique to film-making. Other exhibitors include Damien Hirst and Peter Greenaway.
