Gridlocked roads take the superhighway

Article Abstract:

The UK government has invited private companies to submit proposals on how to operate a system designed to inform drivers about traffic jams, thus reducing road congestion. The 30 million pounds sterling scheme would use a very large network of under-road sensors, which would convey information about traffic levels to regional traffic control centres, which would in turn display these details on electronic noticeboards and on in-car dashboard display units. Funds for operating the system would come from charging drivers for information on alternative uncongested routes.
