Guns and religion drive the intifida

Article Abstract:

Israel captured the West Bank from the Jordanians twenty-five years ago, in 1967, so people now accept sights of Israeli soldiers threatening Palestinians with rifles as normal. There are 11,000 Jewish settlers with assault rifles living beside the tomb of the Prophet Abraham, sacred to Jews and Muslims. These Jews are gunmen who feel they are fighting against terrorism. Their settlements are on a massive scale on a different physical level as the Israelis have seized the high land. Their new roads run east to west avoiding Arab villages. Israeli undercover units search and kill armed Palestinians as happened in Lebanon.

'Pioneers' armed with Bible and bulldozer

Article Abstract:

Confrontation between Arabs and Jews may double as Ma'aleh Adumim's population of 16,000 Jews will increase by 25% in 1992/9 and the 3,500 population of Efrat, Hebron, the West Bank, will increase. This land justifies the existence of the Jewish people and their history according to the Bible. Over 1.7 million Arabs also live in the West Bank and Gaza. Israel has no right to hold these lands for 25 years. If the land were annexed Arabs would no longer expect a Palestinian state in the future. An alternative solution would be re-partition, with each country obtaining some of their nationalistic aims.

Anger blossoms in Lebanese field of flowers

Article Abstract:

The biggest ever deportation from Israel consists of 418 doctors, lawyers, engineers and other sympathisers of the militant Islamic movement Hamas. They believe they have been deported for their religion, not for their politics. As the Lebanese government refused them entry, their plight may help ruin the Middle East peace talks. Their expulsion may lead the way for deportation of the Jews from Palestine.
