Half man, half logo

Article Abstract:

Basketball star Michael Jordan has become a merchandising phenomenon in his own right. Since the late 1980s he has endorsed a very wide range of products, and now has the power to affect the share price and the business success of the companies with which he is associated. He has recently become much more selective about what he is prepared to promote, but still earned around $70 million from merchandising in 1997. His success is partly based on the fact that sport is the one form of popular entertainment that abolishes divisions of wealth, class and race.

Pin-up exposed: why Marky Mark is taking the rap

Article Abstract:

Marky Mark, ex-New Kids on the Block musician, became a rap artist and male model but teenage convictions for racism may harm his career. His advertisements for Calvin Klein appealed to homosexual men but his remarks on Channel 4's 'The Word' led to objections from the US Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. Klein stated its disapproval of homophobia and racism and Marky Mark apologised. However, he subsequently appeared in court charged with breaking someone's jaw.
