Hard lessons about family breakdown

Article Abstract:

The UK National Stepfamily Association has launched a project designed to encourage schools to address more effectively the issues that can arise as a result of family breakdown. In early 1998, it will publish national guidelines on dealing with family breakdown for all schools, seeking to make them more aware of the way they deal with the changing home situations of their pupils. Experts believe that there is a clear need for schools to acknowledge more fully the diversity of pupils' backgrounds.

The myth of the easy A-level

Article Abstract:

Some observers have stated that A-level standards must be getting lower, as pass rates have now reached record levels. Examination boards disagree with this, but the government has responded to concern by ordering an inquiry into A-level standards. Educationists believe that a number of factors have come together to help raise standards. These include demographic changes and the growing willingness of examination boards to publish their marking schemes.

My son's writing is not as lively as my daughter's

Article Abstract:

Girls' writing skills tend to develop more rapidly than those of boys in the final years of junior school and the first years of secondary school. Children are often asked to write from their own experience, which boys find difficult. Experts believe that a wider range of writing genres should now be encouraged.
