Hi-tech rewrites of yesterday's news

Article Abstract:

British newspapers have abandoned their Fleet Street headquarters, leaving behind their purpose built Art Deco buildings. Newspapers including the Financial Times (FT) have moved to Docklands, the FT having moved out of Bracken House which is now a listed building. The building was bought in 1987 by the Obayashi Corporation who were going to demolish it, but it was listed in 1988 and the company were forced to modify their plans. Their architect has kept the shell of the building and revamped the interior, keeping the feel of the newspaper industry.

... and why a starship never got off the ground

Article Abstract:

Bankside Power Station is now to be converted by the Tate Gallery into a new gallery of modern art. However, architectural practice Future Systems had been considering alternative plans for the site before this scheme was announced. It looked at the great potential of the site, situated opposite St Paul's Cathedral, and its scheme was based on a weatherproof glass membrane to enclose the old building. The project was rejected by the Tate, but was useful to Future Systems as a research and development exercise.

Air age acropolis made with Aries in mind

Article Abstract:

The United States Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs is one of the most unusual buildings of the Cold War era. Built in 1954-1962, it is spartan in design, and has received remarkably little attention in literature on post-war US architecture. It is in fact a complete city built in the mountains, with its buildings being Bauhaus-inspired.
