Hoddle pays the final penalty for crossing the hard men of the press

Article Abstract:

Glenn Hoddle, coach of the England football team, has been forced to resign following extensive media coverage of his apparently insensitive remarks about disabled people. This can be regarded as the culmination of growing dislike among journalists for Hoddle. His appointment in May 1996 was warmly welcomed, but relations between him and the press became extremely strained quite quickly. He made no effort to communicate openly with journalists, and doubts began to be expressed about his judgment.

We encourage the mediocre, the mendacious and the cowardly

Article Abstract:

The resignation of Glenn Hoddle as coach of the England football team as a result of controversy prompted by remarks he made about disabled people can be regarded as significant for what it indicates about society as a whole. His departure will not affect the situation of the disabled at all, but will encourage those who place excessive emphasis on political correctness. Hoddle's offence was to give offence, and this case will fuel the cause of all those who take offence extremely easily.
