Home sweet home, for the golden family

Article Abstract:

UK housebuilders tend to focus on developments which conform to stereotyped images of family life, even though research indicates that most new homes will be purchased by single people in the future, rather than families. New homes seem to be designed mainly to provide an environment which protects their residents from the harsh realities of the world. In such developments, all the residents tend to conform to social norms, and outsiders are frowned upon. Very few people question of the wisdom of building on greenfield sites.

Taking care of family business

Article Abstract:

Families still own 75% of all companies in the UK, and these companies account for half of all jobs. Their performance is therefore of key importance to the country's economy. Most family-owned companies continue to appoint younger family members to key positions. This can sometimes be effective, but does not really make sound business sense. Emotive issues tend to dominate in family-owned companies, whereas a business has to be very rational if it is to be truly successful.
