Hooligans, the product of a high civilisation

Article Abstract:

Football hooliganism seems to be a strange phenomenon in UK society, which is generally very peaceful and law-abiding. Those responsible for football-related violence are generally respectable people who have loving families and a decent job. Football hooligans are not the real victims in society, who are unable to travel to football matches and do not have the money to purchase the alcohol that generally fuels football-related violence. Football hooliganism seems to be most adequately explained by the need to indulge in the excesses that are forbidden in private life.

The disaster striking France

Article Abstract:

French society has been characterized by increasing confusion and disorientation since the mid-1970s. Mainstream conservatism and socialism have failed the country, bringing significant problems with unemployment and lack of competitiveness. This has in turn prompted growing support for extremism and nationalism, as reflected in the fact that the Front National achieved 15% of the vote in the last general election. France's political class seems to have become dominated by cowardice and anachronism, and this has fostered decadence in society as a whole.

When governments try to fight fire with fire

Article Abstract:

Peru's authoritarian government has taken a very strong line against terrorism in an attempt to eliminate it completely. Recent events, especially the taking of more than 400 hostages at the Japanese Embassy in Lima by the Movimiento Revolucionario Tupac Amaru, indicate that terrorism is still far from being eliminated. Peru's approach has been very popular in Latin America over recent years, but is now coming to be viewed more as a dictatorship than as a model of peace and economic progress.
