Protest and surival: the return of Joan

Article Abstract:

It is important to put the past behind you, according to folk singer Joan Baez. She prefers to focus on the present and the future, and dislikes talking about the hippie era of the 1960s. She is very strong on stage, but until the late 1980s her life was dominated by psychological problems. She has undergone therapy, and feels that she is now relatively at peace with herself. She moved away from music in the 1980s, but has been making a very successful comeback. She has recently released an album entitled 'Gone From Danger.'

Defending the real Jackie

Article Abstract:

Cellist Jacqueline du Pre constantly generated love, fun and exuberance, according to filmmaker Christopher Nupen, who directed the only two documentaries ever made with her. He is among a number of people who were close to du Pre who reject the negative way in which she is portrayed in the film 'Hilary and Jackie.' He expresses great admiration for her honesty, simplicity, generosity and perceptiveness. He believes that the motive behind making 'Hilary and Jackie' was to make money.

Je suis Egoiste

Article Abstract:

Total originality is very important in producing a successful magazine, according to Nicole Wisniak, editor of Egoiste, which has become very popular among the most fashionable people in France. The magazine has stunning black-and-white photographs, most of which are taken by Richard Avedon, and manages to combine highbrow writing with articles offering light relief. It is only printed very irregularly, but is still regarded as a key fashion accessory.
